KOTOR II’s switch port has a bug, but you can bypass it

This week Aspyr, the studio behind the Nintendo Switch port of knight of Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, accepted the presence of a bug that caused the game to crash during the main quest and prevented at least some players from completing the game.

Today, said Aspyr axios that the bug only affected a few players. The developer also posted an immediate solution on its website and promised a more permanent solution “in the next patch”. There is currently no estimated release date for the official patch.

For players affected by the bug, KOTORII crashes shortly after the player crashes on Onderon as part of the planet’s main quest line. Players can attempt the main quests in any order, but the Onderon quests require you to leave the planet to proceed to the second phase of the storyline, so most players will likely complete the quest fairly late in their run. Luckily, you don’t have to wait for the patch to continue playing the game.

Instead, the studio suggests triple-clicking the left stick, which will open the cheat menu. From there, select “Warp” and then go to “OND504” where the quest will continue from Onderon. my box was one of the unfortunate few affected by the bug and was able to independently verify that the workaround actually works.

However, there is a catch. You will be stuck with the same party you chose to explore Dxun (which takes place right before the buggy quest) and you cannot change your party composition. So if you left the weaker characters on Dxun… well, good luck. You will lead the entire attack alone. If you’ve severely underleveled your B squad, fear not: the cheat menu also includes an invincibility switch. my box reached out to Aspyr to swap party members, but received no response at the time of publication.

On the original Obsidian PC game, KOTORII would give your saved files a yellow “cheat” overlay if you tried to modify them with external tools (even to fix major bugs). So I find it quite weird that in 2022 cheating is the officially recommended way to even complete the game.
