Last Of Us lead actor says AI will push the boundaries of storytelling in games

We already know that The last of us Developer Naughty Dog has at least one more game in the post-apocalyptic series floating around the studio. However, we also know that this is not the next game that the PlayStation-owned studio releases. True, the team has not yet said what the new game is, studio head Neil Druckman has some high hopes based on statements he made in an internal interview with Sony. However, given some of his defenses of AI expressed in this interview, it’s hard to even think about it.

The PlayStation company is launching a major campaign on the topic the future of technology

and video games, and part of it was interviewing Druckmann about his thoughts on the future of video game storytelling. Disappointingly, Druckmann spends large portions of the interview hyping AI technology as a cost-cutting measure. As someone who is a fan of The last of us‘ write when it is written by people like Part IIIt’s a huge bummer that he would even consider using AI to write dialogue, even though he passively mentions “ethical issues” without addressing them. He says that as long as you can “control” AI tools w ith precision, they could be used to create “nuanced dialogue and characters.” Weren’t the beloved characters you and your team created with heart, mind and skill enough?

“AI will truly revolutionize the way content is created, although it raises some ethical questions that we need to address,” said Druckmann. “With technologies like AI and the ability to perform motion capture right from home, we are reducing both costs and technical hurdles. This opens the door for us to take on bolder projects and push the boundaries of storytelling in games. This development truly gives developers the opportunity to bring their visions to life without the traditional barriers.”

Although we don’t know when Naughty Dog’s next game will be released, Druckmann is also working on The last of us‘ Live-action show currently running Filming for the second season.
