Warner Bros. found their Batgirl in In the heights Star Leslie Grace, according to a report from Deadline. The 26-year-old actress will portray Barbara Gordon and her superhero alter ego in the upcoming film for HBO Max.
While we don’t know much about the story, we do know that this film will focus on the Barbara Gordon version of the character rather than the other Batgirls who took over the habit in the comics. That means Batgirl will be the daughter (or niece, whichever part of the continuity you’re drawing on) of Police Commissioner Jim Gordon, who hasn’t been cast in this film. Gordon last appeared in a DC Comics film, played by JK Simmons in Justice League and will be played by Jeffrey Wright next week The Batman.
While we don’t know the plot of the film, we do know some of the creative talents behind the camera. Batgirl The directors are Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the directing duo behind them Bad boys for life. The film is written by Cristina Hodson who also wrote bumblebee, birds of prey, and the one ahead The Lightning.
According to a number of reports, Grace suggested other actresses like Isabella Merced (Sicario: Day of the Soldado), Zoey German (Zombie Land: double tap) and Haley Lu Richardson (Support the girls), but according to Deadline, it was her appearance in this summer’s musical blockbuster In the heights that helped her secure the role.
There is still no word when Batgirl will be released, but if it does it should be streamed on HBO Max instead of going to theaters.
