Let’s kill life’s most annoying boss

If it isn’t make fun of video games, high in life is often a straight-forward, fun first-person shooter with vibrant colors, a killer soundtrack, and fun weapon mechanics. if you liked it ratchet and clamp or Resistance: Fall of Man and haven’t checked out this game, you owe it to yourself to check it out, especially if you have Xbox Game Pass. But some boss fights, like the penultimate bounty, Nipulon, can be a little tricky.

While the first round of combat with Nipulon will be fairly easy, subsequent stages involve some trippy sequences with spinning environments, blurry visuals, and a bunch of fake Nipulons to distract you. Nipulon likes to mess around with your character’s head…which is prone to a Mantis enemy in a game random video game references and other meta silliness, is on brand. At least the guy isn’t reading our memory cards and calling us.

In that sense, the Nipulon fight has a handful of those Solid metal gear References hard to hear under gunfire. Turn on subtitles so you don’t miss them.

Nipulon can be a really frustrating opponent. Especially if you’re playing while you’re, uh, high on what you’re into. This guide will help you break the illusions so you can shoot your globshot at this boss nuisance and then stab the son of a bitch in a puddle of delicious bug blood.

Nipulon Boss structure

The Nipulon fight takes you through a number of different phases. Here is the overall structure that follows:

combat phase oneMission: Fight Nipulon in his office.

Hallucination break one: Chat with Gene.

combat phase two: Fight several Nipulons (damage the blue one to go to the next break).

hallucination pause two: Chat with your character’s sister.

combat phase three: Fight several Nipulons again (damage the blue one to go to the next break).

hallucination pause three: Collect and chat with your Gatlian gun friends.

combat phase four: Walk down a corridor and fight Nipulon and his copies with all four Gatlians at once.

If you’re constantly spinning guns, you almost never have to reload in High On Life.

How to defeat Nipulon: combat phase one (and how to cycle Gatlians for constant damage)

Before you shoot Nipulon, go straight left and take the Luglox chest in his office (You have the option to grab this at the end if you miss it). There is also a reference to Dr. Gurgula on the TV mounted on the wall herebut that might be easier to grasp once the fight is over.

Like other bosses in the game, Nipulon goes through different stages as you lower his health. Considering how late in the game this is, unless you’re playing on the hardest difficulty, Hunter (which isn’t too much of a challenge even beyond the other levels, especially if you play a lot of FPS games), the first one phase should not worry you too much. Choose the tactics you enjoyed, but I’ll break down what worked well for me.

You’re going to fight Nipulon in his office to start (after talking to damn Helen of all goddamn people of all people once again), so Melee weapons like Gus (Shotgun) are very useful. While Nipulon has some resistance to attacks like Kenny’s Globshot (you can’t juggle it), other trickhole shots like Gus’ Disc or Sweezy’s Time Bubble are usable. but Ideally, you want to switch weapons frequently.

high in life‘s weapons are self-reloading if you don’t have them equipped, so Cycling your weapons instead of reloading is a reliable pattern to fall if you don’t maintain a specific weapon or two.

I recommend starting with Sweezy and then progressing through so Gus is your final weapon. Gus’ trickhole shot, his disc, bounces off walls and can be hit with a timed melee strike (pay attention to the disc’s prompt, it’s easy to miss!) to send it across the map again. Hit the disc a few times and you’ll be ready to return to Sweezy, whose trickhole will hopefully be reset or very close by then. The pattern looks something like this:

  1. Fire Sweezy’s trickhole shot, empty her magazine into the enemy.
  2. Switch to Creature, fire its trickhole shot, then empty its magazine.
  3. Switch to Kenny, fire his trick hole, empty his magazine.
  4. Switch to Gus, fire his trick hole (shoot the disc a few times in melee to keep it active), empty his magazine.
  5. Switch back to Sweezy and do it all over again.

Based on when each weapon’s trick hole was charged, your pattern could start with bullets from the magazine, then fire the trick hole closer before switching weapons. If you’re playing this game (properly) in an altered state of consciousness, small patterns like this can help you stay focused. and this works well for the whole game, not just the Nipulon fight.

High on Life Nipulon boss fight

How to beat Nipulon: hallucination breaks one, two, and three

Each phase after the office brawl begins with a small hallucinatory interlude in which you are caught in a loop of objects from other scenes in the game. This happens a total of three times during the fight.

These interludes require you to chat with an NPC and then jump into a black hole that appears in the center of the area to continue your fight with Nipulon. In the first scene you are talking to Gene. The second involves a conversation with your character’s sister.

The spatial effects of these scenes can be trippy. Go to the Pillar of Light once you’ve spoken to each NPC.

The third and final has you chatting with all your Gatlian gun friends, but you’ll have to navigate the Zoomy environment to find each one. You’ll hear everyone calling out to you, so follow the voices to catch everyone. When you’re nearby, you’ll see the circular HUD prompt pointing to an interactive object.

  • Creature lies on an operating table.
  • Kenny is on the table of a Space Applebee.
  • Gus lies on rubble in front of a large drill.
  • Sweezy is on a table on the left side of a truck.

The dialogue options during the first two pauses here don’t have a significant differences, so choose what feels natural.

The repetitive, scalable objects in this environment can be a little tricky to navigate, so just Keep an eye out for the great pillar of light and the black hole once you’ve spoken to each instance’s NPC.

How to defeat Nipulon’s copies: battle phase two and three

Once you cut through the hallucinatory episode of friends and family telling you that you’re a horrible, selfish person doomed to fail (this isn’t at all familiar), you’ll engage with Nipulon in the most annoying way possible : He has multiple versions of himself dancing in a teeming mess of trippy colors.

Don’t force yourself through here with brute force. Trust me. Your first instinct might be to just shoot through all the copies like a process of elimination until you get to the real one. I’m here to tell you that won’t work. Instead of this, You really need to focus on finding the right nipulon.

Fortunately, that’s not too difficult. All of Nipulon’s clones will have dominant green color patterns on their armor and exoskeleton (he’s a bug, he has no skin!). you want to Look out for the Nipulon with blue armor, purple gloves, and a tan exoskeleton. This is our type. Kill him dead, bounty hunter.

The visual effects don’t make it easy, but you’re looking for the guy in blue.

Contrasted with the first showdown in the office, you might want to Stick with Kenny or Sweezy to shoot Nipulon here. Both primary attacks are very accurate and focused, and if you hold down the aim Sweezy will fire a focused sniper shot. Kenny and Sweezy’s accuracy, which comes closest to the designated Marksman Rifles, will make this process much easier. Gus’ shotgun could serve you well here, but I found the three magazine count a little too restrictive.

In the second phase of the fight, these numerous Nipulons swarm around you. Movement is not so important here, you mostly just want to Aim for the correct blue armored Nipulon to destroy its health onward to trigger the next hallucination interlude.

In Nipulon’s third phase, he and his copies mass into a ball and shoot lasers in all directions. As in the second phase, the physical movement is a little difficult as you are floating in a hallucinatory color void, but you should dDo your best to avoid the bright green lasers while aiming for the blue armored Nipulon. Don’t get too distracted when photographing the copiesbut you might find it easier to hit the real Nipulon if you clear out a few (especially in the third stage).

How to defeat Nipulon: fourth (final) phase

There’s not much of a trick in the final phase of the Nipulon fight. Once you’ve chatted up a bit with your Gatlians, you can use all four at the same time. You have to walk down a trippy hallway full of Nipulon copies. The real thing is at the end. While they can harm you and there is some risk of death, this is what you want to do keep going and spam all your weapons to break the barriers of Nipulon copies until you’re back at his office entrance where the real blue one is waiting.

They must move in to deliver the final blow to Knifey. After killing Nipulon, don’t forget to grab the Luglox chest in his office – assuming you didn’t in the beginning. In the same area (the corner with the bookshelves) You should also check out the Dr. Grab Gurgula clue on a wall mounted screen.

The protagonist in High On Life finds a secret clue.

Don’t miss the dr. Gurgula clue in Nipulon’s office!

Once you’ve dealt with Nipulon, it’s time to move on to the game’s final boss. Go back to Gene, collect the bounty for Nipulon and get ready to put an end to this whole thing.
