Canadian YouTuber Linus Sebastian is best known to most as the man behind the wildly popular video Technical tips from Linus Channel has announced that he is stepping down as CEO of the companies he co-founded and has led for the past decade.
In a 10-minute video titled “It’s Time,” Sebastian announces that as of July 1, he will no longer be running Linus Media Group, the company that doesn’t just run that Technical tips from Linus Show, but also companies like Creator Warehouse and Floatplane Media.
“I’m not built for that and I’m tired,” he says. “Like ‘I really can’t take this anymore,’ tired.” And if I try to agonize through another 10 years of business studies, I know I’m going to destroy myself, and in the end, I’ll probably destroy the company and the community that does it I love so much will destroy.”
Of course, he’s not leaving the show or YouTube entirely. We would have said that above if it had been him. Instead, he’ll take on a new job called chief vision officer — which he admits is “a silly, crazy-sounding, made-up role” — that will allow him not only to continue making videos, but maybe even perform In more from them, as he has the freedom to do so without having to focus on all the business matters that come with being the CEO of a company that has about 100 employees at the time of publication.
Interestingly, Sebastian says that at the same time that Linus Media was making this decision, it received a $100 million offer to “sell off,” which came in the form of 60% cash and 40% equity (undisclosed) buying company. However, Linus chose to decline, citing a combination of factors such as the fact that they liked working with the company the way it was and, to be honest, they were already super rich.
Terren Tong, previously at Corsair, will replace Sebastian as CEO.
