Before Overwatch And Marvel RivalsThere was another crazy character-based hero shooter that players loved: Valves Team Fortress 2. Team Fortress 2 is still a relevant game and has had a following since its release in 2007. the surprise publication of a Team Fortress 2 funny, A full seven years after the last edition shocked and delighted fans online.
Issue No. 7 of the current Team Fortress The comic is called “The Days Have Worn Away” and begins with a tribute to Rick May, the Soldier's voice actor, who tragically passed away in 2020. The art is by Heather Campbell, an artist at Valve who does an excellent job of humanizing the ridiculous characters that make up this TF2 pour. There's a boy scout with a boisterous family, a newly married soldier who calls his wife his roommate, and a horrific horror scene involving the administrator. There really is something for everyone here.
If you haven't read the comics yet, I would recommend starting at the beginning. The series began in 2013 “Ring of Fire”and delves deep into the backstory of the main characters and supporting characters like Miss Pauling. As Valve itself puts it on the TeamFortress.com comics page, “Over the years, the comics have created supporting characters and then supporting characters' assistants. The companies mentioned in passing became global empires three generations ago. The game that began with a handful of guys shooting at each other in the desert slowly evolved into the most labyrinthine story in Valve history.”
That's actually good news, because it means you don't have to play much of the game itself to understand this new and exciting story. Between the comics and the Meet the Team videos, Team Fortress 2 has managed to stay in the gaming zeitgeist well past its prime. It's great to see some of these characters get a happy ending after waiting in limbo, and it doesn't look like we'll be getting any more comics.
