Oliphaunt fights. A killer squid monster. Brian Cox as the proud and angry old King of Rohan. The first trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim has it all, including announcing a December release date.

The anime prequel to Peter Jackson’s Lord of the rings The trilogy will be released on December 13, 2024 and looks great. Narrated by Miranda Otto, who played Éowyn in the films, War of the Rohirrim Set 183 years before Frodo’s journey to destroy the One Ring, the film tells the story of Rohan’s fight for survival against a rival Dunlending nation.

Here is the trailer:

The footage shows Helm Hammerhand (Cox) meeting with a rival king to discuss the marriage of their children. But when insults erupt and honour is sullied, a messy brawl ensues that leaves the Dunlending king dead. His son Wulf (Luke Pasqualino) vows vengeance, while Hèra (Gaia Wise), Hammerhand’s daughter and Wulf’s would-be fiancée, tries to navigate a male-dominated political terrain. The resulting battle serves as an origin story for Helm’s Deep, the fortress that will be built in the climax of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

The War of the Rohirrim was originally scheduled to be released earlier this year, but was postponed to 2023 due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. It is directed by Kenji Kamiyama, who is most recently known for the animated series Ultraman, Star Wars: VisionsAnd Blade Runner: Black Lotus. Instead of using the controversial rotoscoping method that Ralph Bakshi used for his original 1978 cartoon, The Lord of the Rings Film, War of the Rohirrim was initially created in 3D and the artists then used it to translate scenes into traditional 2D animation.

The film is currently only being released in theaters, with streaming plans for Max or other services currently unknown. More details are expected at this year’s New York Comic Con in October.
