Jonah Hill and Eddie Murphy star in this new buddy comedy dating Black Creator Kenya Barris who could best be described as a Meet the Fockers-like scenario crossed with a race swap version of Guess who’s coming to dinner. See, there’s a toneless commentary on police brutality! Oh, and there’s an uncomfortable joke about Louis Farrakhan’s inflammatory remarks about the Jewish people! One thing is for sure: You guys is nervous; it says things; and boy hello, it works there! Whether this will be a funny comedy is unclear.

From our review:

There’s this weird notion that good comedy is offensive when in fact it’s empathetic. In order to make someone laugh and do so consistently, it is necessary to first understand something about them. Hence the impulse behind a film like You guys can be good as comedy can make a lot of hay out of the misunderstandings people have about each other while stumbling on understanding. You guys, but is primarily interested in ignorance and as such grows old quickly. Because the most offensive comedy isn’t ignorant or bigoted, it’s just boring.

From our review:

The graveyard of terrible horror comedies is among the saddest and most boring in film. It’s filled with hundreds of tasteless parodies, ridiculous messes, silly trash, and probably a few unfortunate movies that weren’t intentionally made to laugh. The subgenre’s worst films feel like tightrope acts, trying too hard to balance what creators seem to think are two opposite extremes, hoping audiences will be laughing one moment and screaming the next. But following in the footsteps of classics like the original Chucky movie child’s playDirector Gerard Johnstone and the team behind new horror comedy M3GAN realize that laughing and screaming aren’t all that different – and more importantly, that either can be the key to a great time.
