For a large part of its term, Eternal, the newest movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is in its own cosmic corner doing things not (yet) related to the big post-Thanos MCU plan. It’s a beautiful, somewhat self-contained film that stands on its own. However, the post and mid credits scenes go from zero to 60 and introduce a handful of characters that could be incorporated into future movies in really exciting ways.
However, one of these introductions is purely acoustic – a voice that sounds terrible familiar, but unless you can place it, Eternal won’t tell you
[Ed. note: This post contains spoilers for Eternals.]
The voice can be heard at the very end of Kit Harington’s post-credits scene. In the film, Harington plays Dane Whitman, the mostly inconspicuous human friend of Sersi (Gemma Chan), who is an eternal who pretends to be a normal teacher. However, Whitman has a family history that the film alludes to. His post-credits scene shows him on the cusp of hugging her and becoming the Black Knight, one of Marvel’s more obscure characters.
Before he does, however, a voice warns him, “Are you sure you are ready to do this, Mr. Whitman?”
According to a report by Fandom, director Chloé Zhao stated that the voice that sneers Whitman does not belong to any other Mahershala Ali. That said, Blade the Vampire Hunter – one of the first Marvel characters to hit the big screen and soon to be restarted in the MCU with Oscar winner Mahershala Ali in the role.
Even if we don’t see him, it’s a pretty cool nod: two Marvel Swordboys for the price of one.
