Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb, Xbox program director and longtime public figure in the company’s history, has announced that he is leaving Microsoft after 22 years with the company.
Hryb has long been a figurehead of the Xbox brand. Even in retrospect you can find examples of this my city‘s previous coverage of his career reveals (now broken). Aside from public-facing works like the Xbox podcast, Hryb was one of the more fan-oriented members of the Xbox team, and even took part in it Fan Meet and Greet. While his colleagues at Microsoft will likely feel his absence, it’s fair to say that much of the Xbox community will, too.
Hryb made the announcement personally Twitter Account in which he thanked Xbox fans and his colleagues at Microsoft while looking ahead to the “next chapter” of his career.
“After 20 incredible years, I’ve decided to step back and work on the next chapter of my career,” he wrote. “As I take a moment to reflect on all that we’ve accomplished together, I want to thank the millions of gamers around the world who have included me in their lives. Thank you also to the Xbox team members for trusting me to have a direct dialogue with our customers. The future for Xbox is bright and as a gamer I’m excited to see what’s to come.”
At the end of his Twitter thread, Hryb also confirmed that the official Xbox podcast (originally called Major Nelson Radio) will be on hiatus for the summer and will return in a new format without him.
As of this writing, Hryb hasn’t publicly said what his next career move is says he will take time off to go on vacation.
