It’s been a busy week for Meta. On Monday, This is what Mark Zuckerberg announces via Facebook that Meta would launch horizon worlds, the company’s Metaverse social platform, in France and Europe. The Facebook post was accompanied by an image of Zuckerberg’s avatar with the pale, blank stare of a Victorian ghost taking a selfie in front of simple renderings of the Eiffel Tower and the Basílica de la Sagrada Família. Commentators and netizens afterwards immersed in the picture evoke the cartoon graphics throughout the week. Probably not the desired response to a project that’s meant to be herald the digital future.
On Friday, Mark Zuckerberg shared an update on this horizon worlds, complete with a new version of his avatar and a rendering of an ancient Rome-style setting. In the post, he admitted, “The photo I posted earlier this week was pretty straightforward — it was taken very quickly to celebrate the launch.” Zuckerberg added horizon worlds is “capable of much more”.
