Matt Forbeck, New York Times bestselling author and lead designer of the Marvel Multiverse RPGhas teamed up with his son Marty to release a new tabletop adventure set in the world of Minecraft. Now available for pre-order, Minecraft: Roll for Adventure: The Temple of the Charged Creeper is intended to enhance the mass appeal of the online open-world crafting game through an easy-to-learn role-playing rulebook.
The publisher Penguin Random House, does not provide any description of the mechanics – a common theme in pre-orders for major IP-based tabletop releases. The book cover shows two six-sided dice and the publisher's directory states that the game book comes with “four dice”. The brief description also states that the book includes “a removable character sheet” and a “rules reference to help you track your heroic progress,” suitable for solo play or passing to a game master. (Referred to as “your narrator” in this context.)
The adventure takes place in a remote village that has recently been invaded by “Illagers,” a type of hostile mob Minecraft Universe. (They are also the main antagonists in Forbeck's 2020 novel Minecraft dungeons: The Rise of the Arch-Illager.) Similar to a traditional Dungeons & Dragons quest, the player is tasked with helping a village under attack by finding the source of the problem (the Temple of the Charged Creeper) and destroying it.
There were indeed collaborations between Minecraft and Dungeons & Dragons in the past – like that Lightning Fortress Adventure for young players – this standalone adventure is entirely a creation of the Forbecks. Matt Forbeck's previous work, both as a tabletop game designer and author of novels for publishers such as D&D, Minecraft, haloAnd Life is strangealong with its own original titles, gives the lack of description on the game page some weight to throw around. Whether it lands with you Minecraft Fans and tabletop gamers will be happy when the book hits shelves in July 2025.
The hardcover edition of Minecraft: Roll for Adventure: The Temple of the Charged Creeper can be pre-ordered at the Penguin Random House website for $20.
