Late last week, Square Enix announced it was under siege 2020 live service game, Marvel’s Avengerswill no longer receive new content or major updates after March 31st. and all official support for the game ends on September 30, 2023, which is also the date when digital sales will end. While you can still play it offline and online with friends after those dates, it’s effectively game over for the restless online action game. However, even in death, developer Crystal Dynamics has just confirmed that the character of Spider-Man will remain exclusive to the PS4 and PS5 versions.
This saga began just before the release of Marvel’s Avengersannounced Crystal Dynamics Spider-Man would be added to the game at a later date. The famous web-slinger wouldn’t be coming to the Xbox or PC versions, however. Instead of this, PS4 (and later PS5) players only would have access to the character. It took longer than expectedbut finally in November 2021 Spider-Man appeared in the PlayStation versions. At the time, fans suspected it was because Spider-Man was owned by Sony and therefore Spidey was only on PlayStation. (That’s not the case, as Sony only owns the film rights to the character.) But the famous superhero has since appeared in midnight suns on all platforms. So it’s not like Spider-Man can only exist on PlayStation consoles.
And yet, Crystal Dynamics confirmed this in a Jan. 20 blog post that Spider-Man still doesn’t coming for Xbox or PC. Pity! Even if the failed live service game dies, none of Spidey’s corporate overlords can agree to letting him swing freely for the few across all platforms avenger Gamers out there are still enjoying the game.
my city contacted Marvel, PlayStation, Square Enix, Embracer Group, and Crystal Dynamics for comment, but received no response prior to release.
I already know that people will claim in the comments or quote retweets that Sony fully owns Spider-Man (it doesn’t) or that Sony can’t allow the character to appear on other platforms (it can). Nevertheless he is there midnight suns, a game released on Xbox, PlayStation and PC. He can also be seen in mobile games released for iOS, Android and PC.
So it’s entirely doable for Spidey to show up on other consoles if the people pulling the strings, cutting the deals, and sealing the contracts can agree. But nobody seems to care enough about it avenger and its community to make a final gesture of goodwill to players and bring the web-slingin’ hero to Xbox and PC. Apparently if you want to play the full version of the game after support ends in September, you’ll need to own a PlayStation. Tell me again: console-exclusive DLC sucks.
