On December 22nd we say goodbye to one of the only ones Marvel shows or movies to get the multiverse right. Today the trailer for the third season of Marvel What if…? released, giving us a first look at the alternative reality mashups we’ll be exploring during Christmas week.
During the 140-second trailer we are thrown from one dream scenario to the next. We get Monica Rambeau in a story where she finds herself Captain Marvelflying away from the seemingly annoying Ultron Sentries from the first season. There’s a stunning appearance of several Avengers flying around in mech suits before coming together as one badass whole Power Rangers-like Megazord after Sam Wilson modifies one of the most iconic Marvel lines of all time by saying, “Avenger…gather!” That alone takes time to not only process what a machine with the combined powers of Avengers like Rambeau is capable of and Shang Chi with the Ten Rings can do it, but what otherworldly power is strong enough to take on such an all-powerful giant that has to take on her.
One of those opponents will undoubtedly be Spectral Vision, also known as White Vision, making his first appearance on a Marvel TV show since he flies away during his fight with the Vision created by Wanda Maximoff in the Hex WandaVision. There also appears to be Mysterio’s devious self, attached to wires and likely powering devastating illusions, such as the three ominous guardians that appear and Dormammu, the demonic being who does not have the full extent of his powers when he first appears in the first part was able to show season of the show.
Thanks to Marvel’s obvious multiverse mandate for almost all of its properties, everything that happens in What if…? could be explored through interdimensional travel in other properties. This is why Riri Williams appears in this series as Ironheart six months earlier their own live-action series Debuts, so interesting. But nothing in this trailer caused as much excitement as the sight of Storm, the thunder goddess, wielding Mjolnir. As she appears to be voiced by the same actress who voiced her X Men ’97– Alison Sealy-Smith – and actually received the so-called gavel Stormcaster in the comics that What if…? scenario could be more than an isolated case.
There are so many Easter eggs in this short trailer. So go ahead and experiment, theorize, and party to your heart’s content, because soon we’re going to get our fill of Marvel. After the first episode of the final season streams on Disney+ on December 22nd, the next seven episodes will be released daily until December 29th.
