Not only is melon pan delicious, but a Japanese company believes it can make a good mask.
Experimental think tank from Osaka Goku no Kimochi The Labo created “Mask pan” or “masked bread” after college students from Fukuoka and Okinawa decide they want it sniff the smell of bread the whole time. What better way to do this than wearing a melon pan on your face?
FNN reports that Goku no Kimochi The Labo roped the famous melon pan specialty store Melon de Melon to bake the bread. Each mask pan has the center cut out to make room for the wearer’s mouth and nose. As silly as this may seem (and that’s a good thing), the melon pan’s signature crispy exterior is said to have some degree of potency.
According to the official Mask Pan site, the masks were rated by an outside group. Unitika clothing technology‘s research department, and the results suggested the possibility that the toppings were equal to, or even better than, other commercially available toppings Urethane masks to prevent droplets from spreading.

While these aren’t exactly N-95 or medical masks, they’re not just a gag product as they offer some protection. As much as I love melon pan, I wouldn’t want to wear it on my face all day. Others seem to be doing it because all the masks allocated for June deliveries are sold out!
However, these are certainly not commonplace in Japan. You and pretty much anyone else would be surprised to see them in public – even shocked.
Goku no Kimochi The Labo is currently preparing the July batch with a set of five bread masks priced at 1,800 yen ($ 16.40). The bread masks are sent chilled and can be kept for one day after thawing.
And yes, you can of course eat the melon bread mask. After it was on your sweaty face. All day. Yum.
