It’s no secret that Megan Thee Stallion is one gigantic Anime fan.
Over the years, the 29-year-old Grammy-winning rapper and songwriter has promoted her favorite shows on social media and cosplayed Soul Eater‘s Death the Kid and My Hero AcademiaThis is Shoto Todoroki. Her love of the medium extends to her music, whose lyrics make up everything NarutoThis is Sasuke Uchiha Dragon BallThis is Goku.
Polygon sat down with Megan ahead of this year’s Crunchyroll Anime Awards to learn more about her love of anime and fashion, and to ask her one burning question: Which anime character is the definitive “hot anime girl” of all time?
Megan is, of course, an authority on “Hot Girl Shit”: the term itself is a reference to Megan Thee Stallion’s 2018 song “Hot Girl,” as well as her 2019 single “Hot Girl Summer,” which featured the phrase in turned into a characteristic catchphrase. In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) Megan addressed the meaning of the term following the debut of “Hot Girl Summer,” explaining, “Being a hot girl is about being unapologetically YOU, having fun, being confident, living YOUR truth, the life of being a party, etc.” [sic].”
So who is the definitive anime hot girl? According to Megan, it’s Kagome Higurashi from Inuyasha.
“Definitely from Kagome InuyashaMegan told Polygon. “She made all the boys fight over her; She runs around with her jewelry around her neck trying to put everything back together and she just always comes out on top. She also has good hair [laughs] this is important.”
Kagome Higurashi is one of the main protagonists of Rumiko Takahashi’s 1996 fantasy-adventure manga, which was later adapted into an anime by studio Sunrise in 2000. He was introduced to Western audiences for the first time Inuyasha when it aired on Adult Swim’s late night animation block from 2002 to 2006. The series follows Kagome, a young student living in present-day Tokyo who is magically transported back in time to feudal-era Japan after falling into a well. She travels alongside a half-demon warrior named Inuyasha to retrieve the scattered shards of a magical to recover an artifact called the Shikon Jewel.
When asked which upcoming anime she was most excited about, Megan asked some big questions about which anime she thought would be coming back in the near future. “I really want them to come back HunterXHunter, and I really want them to bring it back Black clover – I’m shooting my shot right now, in case anyone’s interested!”
When I spoke to Megan, she was wearing a look inspired by her Satoru Gojo by Jujutsu Kaisen. For the multi-entertainer, it’s not just a nod to her favorite shows, but also a way to embody their power.
“If I see someone who’s like a badass character and they’re super strong or have good main character energy or have some cool power, then I like to dress like them,” she said. “With Gojo you can’t touch him and I have a feeling you can’t touch me either.”
