Neon Genesis Evangelion cosplayer builds incredible mech suit

A Neon Genesis Evangelion cosplay suit

I haven’t counted the amount of anymore Neon Genesis Evangelion Cosplay I’ve posted on this site for the past 10 years but pretty much everything has been centered around the anime’s characters, especially Rei and Asuka. His enormous’ Mechs are a bit trickier.

A fact that didn’t stop Maolo a bit with this Eva-01 cosplay, which impresses both with its workmanship and its flexibility. While the picture above (and the one below) looks like it was promo shots for a very expensive action figure, they are actually a functional suit – complete with lighting – that gives Maolo full freedom of movement.

The 01 here is Maolo’s third attempt on one Evangelion Unit outfit, so they’ve learned a thing or two over the years and are the result of a whopping seven months of work.

If you are wondering how the suit can look so crisp and at the same time so flexible, Maolo has taken a look at the classics here. Almost the entire unit consists of pieces of foam that have been individually wrapped with colored artificial leather, which, in contrast to lacquered parts, can look much smoother and metallic.

It’s a technique that enables a suit that both looks good and moves and looks good Power Rangers (and countless other Tokusatsu series) have been made for decades.

I’ve mentioned how the suit moves a few times now without actually showing it, so here’s a quick video Maolo made that highlights how the suit allows for surprisingly quick and natural range of motion for something like that is angular and has so many parts.

You can see more of Maolo’s amazing cosplay work on their Twitter page, including footage of one of her other Evangelion suits, like the one below.
