Netflix announced today that Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri will return for a fifth season The Witcher – and that the show’s fifth season will be its last. Season 5 will be filmed following Season 4, which has just begun production.
The announcement came with the first official hints about the plot of the fourth season, in which Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri separately try to come together on a dangerous and conflict-ridden continent.
“Following the shocking, continent-changing events that conclude Season 3,” Netflix’s official synopsis reads, “the new season follows Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri as they separately traverse the war-ravaged continent and its many demons must.” . If they can embrace and lead the groups of misfits they find themselves in, they have a chance of surviving the baptism of fire and finding their way back together.”
The “baptism of fire” line in the Netflix announcement seems to be a clear Easter egg for fans, suggesting that Season 4 will primarily follow the book Baptism of fire, the fifth book in the Witcher series by Andrzej Sapkowski. It’s unclear whether Season 4 will go beyond the fifth book, considering the series still has three books to adapt and only two seasons left to cover that ground. However it’s split between seasons 4 and 5, the series will eventually make it through the events of The Tower of the Swallow
The streaming giant also revealed footage and photos from the production reunion for the first table reading show The Witcher Season 4 with returning cast members and new addition Liam Hemsworth. Season 4 will be the first season of The Witcher Hemsworth in the role of Geralt after Henry Cavill left the series.
