So at least for a while there was a plan for Daybreak’s Studio Dimension Ink (DC Universe Online) to develop an MMO based on the Marvel Universe. This game, whatever it was called and whatever it was, has now been cancelled.

You may remember the game’s announcement late last yearmaybe not, it was something that would appear in a financial report rather than a theatrical trailer. DC Universe Online and city of heroes’ Jack Emmert was responsible for the development at the time.

In the original announcement Zack, thank God, was trying to get optimistic on this game’s chances of success after a long line of failures in Marvel MMOs:

Hopefully this Marvel MMO is more successful than previous attempts. There was the aforementioned Marvel MMO that was reportedly canned by Daybreak in 2018, but before that there was the 2013 release failed Marvel Heroes which closed after some name changes in 2017. Previously, Emmerts Cryptic Studios was working with Microsoft on a Marvel MMO. But that game was canceled in 2008 and reborn as champions on the internetthat will still exist in 2021. And who knows how many other unannounced Marvel MMOs have been planned, announced, and canceled over the past decade.

womp The cancellation was announced in a press release from Daybreak’s owners EG7, in which they say that the resources freed up by freezing the MMO will be diverted to other, smaller and existing projects:

EG7 announced today that it will be ceasing development of the Marvel Project at Daybreak Games. Based on the reassessment of the development risk profile, investment size and long-term product portfolio strategy for the group, the Board has decided to change development priorities and reallocate resources within the group to focus on alternative long-term projects. The company had planned to invest more than SEK 500 million in the Marvel project over the next three years. The company will now spread this investment across several smaller projects within the group, including the previously announced major upgrades to The Lord of the Rings Online and DC Universe Online, as well as new ways to play using our first-party Original IPs.
