New mod turns dead space into a spooky first-person horror game

The original Empty room may not look so fancy new remake released earlier this year, but thanks to a new fan-made mod, you’ll be able to play the original game in first-person. Not only does it look scarier, it also looks really good.

First published in 2008, the original Empty room was developed by Visceral Games and published by EA for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. It’s a terrifying third-person survival horror game that feels heavily inspired Resident Evil 4 and sci-fi movies like event horizon. Both the original Empty room (and its flashy 2023 remake) rely on being able to see the main character Issac Clarke’s back and body as this is where your health and other HUD elements are placed. And having the camera back there lets you see more around you and protect you from ambushes lurking around corners.

So what if a mod eliminated all of that and turned the game into a first-person shooter, aka a first-person hoax? Would the horrors be scarier? Would health management be almost impossible? Would the experience be more difficult overall? Well, you don’t have to wonder anymore.

EA / reverse engineered gamer

First Person Mod is simply titled but looks superb Empty room Mod created by Reverse engineered gamer that does exactly what it suggests: it rotates Empty room into a first-person experience. The mod is available now and can be downloaded via Nexus Modsbut remember this was designed for the original Empty roomnot the modern remake.

According to the mod creator, it only took about five days to create the “core” of the mod. However, it took “several months” and a lot of work to tweak and tune the mod to work as well as it does and actually make the game playable in first person. The original plan was not to create a first-person mod, but to experiment to see what kind of camera mods could be implemented into the horror game. my city I contacted the modder to know what these other camera mods are.

“This quickly grew into a first-person mod project,” explained Reverse Engineering Gamer.

“Admittedly there were some frustrating times creating this mod, but overall I had a lot of fun creating this project. I hope you guys enjoy playing/using this mod as much as I enjoyed creating it.”

While the mod creator suggests that you “enjoy” your creation, I think most people will be too scared to enjoy it as they frantically shove health packs in their faces, unable to tell if they’re close to death or not, while being hunted by an unseen pack of undead villains. Have fun!
