Saturday is april fools. So, as usual, companies out here are posting hoax trailers and “funny” tweets. But then you have Sega, who just released a brand new, totally free, actually real crime game on Steam that’s all about killing someone Sonic the Hedgehog. That’s how you do an April Fool’s joke, folks. Also: holy shit.
Launched today on Steam at the perfect price of zero dollars and pennies, The murder of Sonic the Hedgehog is a short mystery game featuring popular characters from the Sonic franchise who work together to find out: who the hell killed Sonic the Hedgehog? I mean, I know his 3D games have been pretty bad for years and his fans can be annoying, but I don’t think the bruise deserves to be gotten, you know?
In a trailer released March 31, Sega proudly boasts that it’s heard all of the feedback from players and that its next game takes the franchise in a “bold new direction,” adding that it’s excited to “be able to announce” that Sonic is dead.

According to Sega, players will be able to question some of their “favorite characters” as they try to figure out who killed Sonic and why. The game features fully hand-drawn landscapes and character art. However, The murder of Sonic the Hedgehog was not developed by Sonic Team, as stated on the game’s Steam page. So don’t consider this official canon, unlike when Sonic kissed a woman. Or do. What am I interested in? i am not your father
While most April Fool’s jokes are bad and not funny, I give Sega credit for this one: killing Sonic and making a game about it is a very good thing. Bravo.
