The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom got a big, rollicking new trailer on Thursday, revealing all-new gameplay, story and character details about Nintendo’s sequel breath of the wild. But Nintendo still has some secrets to share, like a newly leaked ad for Tears of the Kingdom And the official website of the game have uncovered. The latter contains a small but enticing detail: Link’s journey begins in the skies of Hyrule.
According to the official Zelda website, players will first gain control of Link on the mysterious floating islands “that have suddenly appeared in the sky over Hyrule”. “There, our hero must gain new abilities before returning to the surface world to begin his epic adventure,” Nintendo says on the game’s website.
It makes sense. Some of the earliest artwork – showing Link from high above overlooking Hyrule – teased that, and trailers show the game’s hero diving much into the land below.
Much has changed on the surface of Hyrule, says Nintendo: “Familiar places have been dramatically altered, with new towns, dank caverns, and mysterious gaping chasms springing up around the world.” also teased from the start, with Link and Zelda apparently exploring caves housing what appears to be the mummified corpse of Ganondorf.
But players can delve deeper into the bowels of Hyrule than they anticipated. A video advertisement for Tears of the Kingdom shows Link exploring at a depth of -470 units below the surface, based on the coordinates at the bottom of his minimap. The Sky Islands are about 1,500 units high, suggesting Link will go deep underground.
In this deep underground area, Link shoots an arrow at a tree to light up the area around him. This seems to be a feature of Tears of the Kingdom‘s Fuse mechanic, which has Link seemingly attaching a flower — maybe a nightshade — to an arrow to create makeshift light sources.
This video also confirms that the three-eyed dragon Link will encounter is actually a Gleeok. The video shows the name Fire Gleeok, so it’s possible there are other elemental species of the dragon Tears of the Kingdom. Be it in relation to the elements of fire, earth, wind and water or simply to the elemental types of weapons breath of the wild (Fire, Ice, Lightning) remains to be seen.
All will soon be revealed; The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Coming to Nintendo Switch on May 12th.
