Their deadlines or postponements due to the coronavirus epidemic, internationally trained sports bodies have turned to esports to give their fans some competition to watch while staying indoors. The NHL is the latest organization to emerge, reported Thursday that about 50 real hockey players have signed up to represent their teams NHL 20 a competition called the NHL Player Gaming Challenge.
This will not be a tournament by any means; the NHL has launched a series of one-off games that will play mostly during the month of May. It sounds like the league has edited the series following some exciting headlines – for example, another first game will feature the Calgary Flames and Ottawa Senators, with Intraanan contestant putting Matthew Tkachuk against his younger brother Brady Tkachuk.
"The challenge for the NHL Player presented by Honda is going to take another game," said Chris Golier, vice president of business development and NHL design, when the news came out. "We know how competitive our players are, and with the interaction and interaction between the players, this series of competitions will be very interesting to watch."
One or two players from each of the 31 NHL teams will participate in the Player Gaming Challenge. And the 50-year-old is another high-profile athlete, playing football instead of hockey: Seattle Seahawks tight end Luke Willson will represent Seattle's upcoming NHL franchise, set to begin play in the 2021-22 season. You can see the full list of participants below as well on the league website.
The games will take place on Thursday and Sunday during the four weeks starting April 30, hosted by Los Angeles Kings analyst Alex Faust. The NHL will broadcast all matchups on its Twitch channel and other social platforms, including YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook, and all games will appear "within the N air Network," the league said. In addition, some games will be broadcast in Canada via Sportsnet One (starting May 1 at 4 p.m. ET) and in the U.S. on NBC Sports Network (which begins April 30 at 5 p.m. ET). Esports organization ESL Gaming is producing the Player Gaming Challenge, which will be played in the PlayStation 4 version of NHL 20
The NHL's announcement of the esports event follows similar efforts from other sports agencies. Baseball players have entered into fierce competition in the MLB Show Players League, and football fans have been able to watch their favorite players from both Major League Soccer and the English Premier League take it out.
