Usually whenever kidney Creator Yoko Taro emerges, the author hides his face from the public with a huge mask modeled on Emil the odd-looking one kidney Character. However, when fans attended Anime Expo 2023 to promote his new anime, they witnessed one new and quite frankly terrible look for taro. When I asked him what happened to his old mask, he told me he lost it the night before the convention.
According to Taro, that is kidney The creator wasn’t to blame for his missing mask. See, a producer for Fuji TV, which describes Taro as one of Japan’s “biggest and most ambitious” television companies, lost the Emil mask while the two were having drinks at a Los Angeles bar the night before Taro was due to host a host panel about his upcoming anime, KamiErabi GOD.app.

Taro claims that when he asked the Fuji producer to get him a new mask for Anime Expo, the producer said he couldn’t find one. Until they came across a large leprechaun mask at an LA costume store.
“Of course in LA, you know? Leave it to LA to have this specialty shop just for masks. And so we went into this store and there was the biggest mask, which was literally the biggest that was on the shelves and it had been there for 30 years,” Taro said my city.
Taro surmised that the mask was a parting gift given to the company by the shopkeeper’s grandmother, “or something like that.”
“I was like, ‘Oh poor thing, but it was the best mask out there. It just fitted best. And that’s how I convinced them to let me buy it,” Taro said.
Yoko Taro is convinced his spooky new mask is cursed
The mask apparently cost him $120, which Taro thought was reasonable considering how short notice he needed it. However, the “super cheap” price comes with the caveat that there’s a good chance it’s cursed. His current theory is that the ghost is possessed by either the shopkeeper’s grandmother or a cousin who apparently died in 1945.
“It has to be possessed or something. … It has to be cursed or possessed. There’s something going on,” Taro said.
When I suggested that given its leprechaun-like appearance, the mask might bring good luck and not be cursed, Taro looked at me in surprise and said, “Is that what it is? A leprechaun mask?” I said that it was somehow reminiscent of St Patrick’s Day, but that didn’t seem to change his mind that it was cursed.
To his credit, the mask’s soullessness makes it a whole lot scarier than Emil’s mask, so he might be on to something.
Currently, Taro’s staff is of the opinion that it is probably in his best interest to return the mask to where it came from. Whether or not for fear of actually cursing it, they didn’t specify.
