Although officially it is not in our hands see you later this year (so if you took part in the first wave of pre-orders), panic unique Playdate handheld is already being poked and nudged by people lucky enough to get a developer unit. One such developer recently shared a nice little project that revived Flipnote Studio, a fan-favorite Nintendo DS app, from the depths of digital hell.

For my money Flipnote Studio was one of the coolest things that came out of the Nintendo DS. It lets you draw and sequence a series of still images to create what is essentially a digital flip book. FlipnoteThanks to its simplicity, anyone could quickly create fun little works of art. You could also go crazy and make sweeping creations like Flipnote warrior, a 34-minute anime developed entirely in the sequel to Nintendo 3DS.

Unfortunately the original Flipnote Studio went the way of the dodo after the closure of the Nintendo DSiWare shop in 2017 and left many lovingly designed animations languishing on outdated handhelds. There was once a service to transfer old creations to the 3DS version, but that too has since been abandoned by Nintendo.

Enter James Daniel.

After the start a web-based Flipnote player In 2018, Daniel recently set his sights on getting older Flipnote Studio Projects working on the playdate. The result is an app called Playnote studio, every old one can play Flipnote Studio Animation by simply dragging the files from the memory card of a Nintendo DSi and storing them in the Playdate’s own memory.

The initial on Twitter Playnote studio Reveal earned hundreds of retweets and thousands of likes, which took Daniel by surprise.

“Very easily (okay, rather very) overwhelmed by the reaction to it.” Daniel wrote yesterday afternoon. “It’s by far the best traction I’ve ever done! I hope it meets the expectations! “

Daniel hopes to have it Playnote studio ready for the Playdate to start later this year, the official date of which is still up in the air. In any case, I’d say it’s time to dig out those old Nintendo DSi systems folks because your Flipnotes just got a second chance at life.
