There are all kinds of demographics that will be very interested in the near future zelda Game, but this new trailer for Tears of the Kingdom— one that falls somewhere between a personal appeal and a personal attack on me, a 43-year-old man — has a very specific audience in mind.
The Week of the Games: Return to Hyrule

The kids will buy it. The young people, the young adults, that’s new zelda Game, these people all pre-ordered the game months ago (or bugged their parents into pre-ordering it). But old players? That’s a different story. Older players have jobs. They might have a big house, they might have a family, they might have other things to do instead of playing video games all the time.
Sure, they could own a Switch and have been there zelda sometime – maybe not until 2017! – but that was six years ago and times are changing. For example, in 2017 I was 37 years old, had two children and worked on a video game website. In 2023, I’m… OK, bad example, but there’s going to be a lot of people in Nintendo’s crosshairs for this game who might not be as excited about it zelda as if they were the last.
For them, Nintendo Australia made this trailer, and it sure is something:
There are two ways you can read this trailer. The first is the clear intention of its creators and Nintendo, which is that this guy, who has a boring job and life because he’s a boring middle-aged man, can still find some joy in this world. And he can find it by staying up late playing a video game.
This reading works, especially if you are the target market! zelda
But there is also something unsettling about the whole thing. It’s shot nicebut how IGN’s Brian Altano says maybe below to So; it’s starting to make you forget that this is a video game trailer and think maybe this is just a very sad movie about a very sad man:
I think both can be true at the same time! More video game trailers like this please, it’s nice to see a real thought put into you.
