Nintendo announced on Sunday that it will hold its next Nintendo Direct on August 19, but told viewers not Game announcements or news about the successor to the Nintendo Switch, also called Switch 2, are to be expected.
“Join us tomorrow, August 19th at 3:00 p.m. PT, for a tour of the Nintendo Museum, scheduled to open in Kyoto, Japan in fall 2024,” Nintendo posted from its X account“The Nintendo Museum Direct livestream will last approximately 10 minutes.”
But a reservation quickly followed: “Please note that there will be no game announcements or mentions of the Nintendo Switch’s successor during this presentation.” This is a classic case of expectations. Nintendo knows its players are eagerly awaiting news about the next console, and wants people to know they won’t find it here. While that’s a shame, it would be much worse for players if there were no details about what to expect. (Of course, why would anyone expect news about the Switch 2 during the museum tour? Unknown!)
However, the Nintendo Museum tour sounds fantastic. Nintendo announced in 2021 that it intends to transform its Nintendo Uji Ogura factory in Kyoto, Japan, into a museum that will “showcase the many products Nintendo has released throughout its history.” said in a press releaseThe original building was converted in 1969 to produce playing cards and Hanafuda cardsas well as a “customer service center for product repairs,” Nintendo said.
Nintendo has only released renderings of the new Nintendo Museum so far, so Monday’s tour will provide the first detailed look. Nintendo said it is expected to open in the fall.
