Christopher Nolan didn’t release a film this year, so to compensate, theaters are bringing back one of his old films. Interstellar was scheduled to return to theaters next month, but is being pushed back to December instead. diversity Reports.
The 2014 space epic starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain will return to theaters on December 6, instead of the originally planned September 27. The revival marks the 10th anniversary of Nolan’s ninth film and will include 70mm IMAX screenings.
Interstellar follows astronauts on a mission to find a new habitable planet for Earth’s remaining inhabitants to escape to. A film about planetary destruction and the power of love, it’s one of Nolan’s more emotional and human projects. It’s the only time he worked with McConaughey, and the actor delivered one of his best performances in it at the peak of his career. the McConaissance (Dallas Buyers Club was a year earlier).
So why the delay? “The theatrical release was postponed to coincide with the relaunch of the home entertainment program,” diversity reports. I have no idea what that really means, because Interstellar is already available domestically, but the publication says Paramount denies recent rumors that the delay was due to lost or destroyed copies of the original 70mm reels.
Instead, Paramount says that there are many archived copies of the film, but that some reels of film are worn out from normal use. The company adds that it is normal for them to become unusable after their original theatrical appearances. I guess Paramount just didn’t want to Transformers One at the box office this month.
Whatever the case, it will be worth waiting a few more months so that fans can witness once again one of the coolest space sequences in the film on the big screen.
