In recent years there has been no shortage of vampire films and television series. There have been Renfield, Abigail, Interview with a vampire, What we do in the shadowsand more, all exploring different genres (with varying degrees of success) through the lens of the night’s most popular creatures. But we haven’t had many truly scary vampires lately, and it seems Nosferatu is here to correct that fact.

The latest remake of the classic German horror film – itself an unlicensed adaptation of Dracula – comes from The VVitch And The lighthouse Director Robert Eggers seems to be leaning on the oppressively dark and creepy atmosphere of the original film.

The film follows Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult, who also appeared in Renfield) and all the strange things that happen to him after he visits the castle of the mysterious and vampiric Count Orlak (Bill Skarsgård). In the original story, this (presumably) involves the Count moving to town to pursue Hutter’s wife, who already seems to be under the vampire’s spell.

The first trailer for the film, which went live on Monday, is designed to set the mood for dark rooms and pitch-black castles. We get glimpses of Orlak’s castle, but most of the trailer focuses on the people of London who seem to be eagerly awaiting his terrifying arrival. Of course, we don’t get to see much of Orlak, better known as Nosferatu – just his silhouette, which gives us a fantastically creepy ending to the trailer.

The film’s star-studded cast also includes former Eggers collaborators Willem Dafoe and Ralph Ineson, as well as Emma Corrin and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

In the great tradition of counter-programming, to which films such as Wolf of Wall Street And Blindness, Nosferatu is expected to be released on Christmas Day, so you and the whole family can meet the Count.
