Octopath Traveler 2 features eight new characters, but the jobs they perform are the same as in the previous game, with a few changes. If you’re not sure who to start with or what each character and their main quest do, we break it down for you.
The newcomers in Octopath Traveler 2 Are latent powersspecial abilities that characters can use in battle once a gauge fills up, similar to Final Fantasy’s famous Limit Break feature. Octopath Traveler 2 also adds a day and night system that gives characters two path actions instead of just one.
Path Actions are non-combat abilities that characters can use on NPCs. There is a lot of overlap between path actions, as they mostly result in killing someone, gaining intel, or getting an item from an NPC. However, the method the characters use to do this is different.
You can also add side jobs across the board, but these are the ones you start with and will keep. Side jobs give you stats and skills, but you won’t be able to do everything a character can do with that main job. For example, Ochette is a hunter who can catch animals and use them to fight for them, but a character with a secondary hunter job cannot possess this ability.
You may be wondering which character is the best to start with, and for that the answer is: well, it depends. How you want to play is entirely up to you, and you’ll be able to unlock all of the characters fairly soon after launch. The only reason your first choice matters is that You cannot trade them out of your party until you complete their final chapter. You should consider everything when choosing your first character: their passive abilities, latent abilities, weapons and elements, path actions, and how they play in general. Below we talk about the eight characters and how useful (or not so useful) they are in the early game.
Ochette (Hunter)
Ochette captures monsters and can then either summon them for her own use in battle or turn them into items such as B. HP restoring jerky. Her latent power gives her access to special abilities that deal massive damage, hit multiple targets, or buff them up. She uses an axe, a bow and electric magic.
During the day, Ochette can Provoke people into battle while they may at night make friends NPCs use items they like to make them follow her. These NPCs can then be used in battle.
Should you start with Ochette?
While her animal companions can give her a wide range of attacks, she’s quite reliant on having strong monsters at her side. Her latent power isn’t particularly exciting, although the debuff and shield breaking ability is strong. However, she can provide a wealth of healing items by sacrificing her captive animals.
It starts between the two continents and gives you early and quick access to the other characters.
Castti (pharmacist)
Castti assembles items to deal elemental damage or inflict status effects on enemies. She can also mix items to heal her partymates. Her latent power allows her to brew without items. She uses an ax as a melee weapon and ice magic.
Castti can Requests people during the day for information and Calm people at night to put them to sleep.
Should you start with Castti?
Castti’s bread-and-butter abilities involve many ingredients to deal massive damage. She’s not great without her. However, Apothecary has a cheap cure that doubles as a revive, which can be extremely useful in the early game.
Castti is unlocked on the western continent near Hikari and south of Agnea and Partitio.
throne (Thief)
Throné is a sneaky thief with sticky hands due to her ability to steal from enemies. Her latent power allows her to perform two actions in one turn. Throné uses a dagger, sword and dark magic.
At night, she spices up the party at the beginning of the fight.
During the day Throné Steal from NPCs; At night she can ambush them and knock them out without the need for a fight.
Should you start with Throné?
Full disclosure: I started Octopath Traveler 2 with thrones. Your Steal skill is extremely useful to start with, as being able to steal items and gear from townspeople will help you save (and make) money. She has reliable damage and as a thief she has many useful debuffs. Most importantly, her nightly buff is unmissable. It gives you (essentially) three rounds of disgusting damage at the start of each fight, making each boss a breeze. Along with Temenos’ debuff at the beginning of the fight, you can easily wipe out enemies.
Throné is on the eastern continent, near Temenos and Osvald.
Osvald (Scholar)
Osvald is a master at casting area spells. There’s a reason for his high mana cost: when he casts a fire spell, he hits every monster in battle. His latent power allows him to focus that energy on a target and hit that target very hard. He uses a staff as his weapon and uses fire, ice, and electric magic.
Oswald can Test people for information during the day and A cup them for objects at night. In battle, he can reveal some enemy weaknesses immediately after the battle begins.
Should you start with Osvald?
Osvald deals a lot of damage but is limited by his mana pool in the early game. He doesn’t have much and his skills are expensive to use. However, he’s pretty good at taking out a lot of enemies at once. His ability to reveal weaknesses early in the fight is also great, so you don’t have to spend a few turns guessing.
Osvald begins in the northern part of the eastern continent, near Throné and Temenos.
division (dealer)
Partitio is a merchant from the West. In battle he can use money to hire people to fight for him. His latent power allows him to restore BP instantly. He uses a polearm and a bow as weapons and uses fire magic.
During the day Partitio Buy Items from NPCs, and at night he can To rent NPCs follow him. Just like Ochette and Tenemos, these NPCs can be summoned into battle. His hired NPCs can also help him get discounts and other benefits from shops.
Should you start with Partitio?
Partitio is more of a support, but he can help you make a lot of money early on by using the trader’s gathering ability on weakened monsters, along with his money-boosting support abilities. He can also help provide your team with BP as he can donate his to party members so they can continue to attack.
Partitio begins on the western continent in the northern area, near Agnea.
Agnea (dancer)
Agnea specializes in buffing team members, including the NPCs she can summon to help. Her latent power spreads single target buffs across the group. Agnea uses a dagger and wind magic.
Agnea can use them Beckon Ability to make the townsfolk follow her (and fight for her) during the day and begging NPCs for items at night.
Should you start with Agnea?
Agnea, like Partitio, is more of a secondary character, but she’s still very useful. Her supplication ability allows her to politely ask NPCs for their items, which is extremely useful early on. Her damage is lackluster, but she can buff your team’s attack and boost their turns in battle, allowing you to land some extra powerful hits.
Agnea begins in the northern part of the western continent, near Partitio.
Temenus (Cleric)
Temenos casts holy magic and group-wide healing spells. Its latent power allows you to deplete enemy shield points, even if they aren’t weak for its attack type. He uses a staff and holy magic.
If you use Temenos at night, enemies will start using debuffs at the beginning of the fight.
We can be afraid guide NPCs around during the day and Force people at night to get information from them. To successfully coerce them, you must fight them and break their shield in one fight.
Tenemos’ guided NPCs can be summoned to help you in the fight as well.
Should you start with Temenos?
Temenos’ party-wide heal is useful, and his holy magic does a lot of damage. His latent ability guarantees that he can break shields, making him a boss destroyer. His night ability, which debuffs enemies, also makes killing bosses a breeze. Combine him with Throné (who’s nearby!) to really crush enemies in the starting turns at night.
Temenos lies on the eastern continent below Osvald and above Throné.
Hikari (Warrior)
Hikari is a warrior prince who fights for his kingdom. His latent power allows him to unleash extremely powerful attacks. He uses a sword and a polearm. Hikari doesn’t do magic by nature.
During the day, Hikari can Challenge NPCs to eliminate them and learn new combat skills from them. At night he can bribe people for information.
Should you start with Hikari?
Hikari is a traditional JRPG warrior through and through. He deals massive damage and can protect your allies by taunting the enemy. His ability to learn new skills from NPCs is valuable, but overall he’s a reliable, fierce boy who can dish out what he needs. Its lack of magic makes it difficult to get started, as you’ll only have two options (sword and polearm) to break shields early on.
Hikari begins in the southern part of the western continent, near Castti and below Agnea and Partitio.
