One Piece manga meets QWOP in an incredibly frustrating fan game

The emotional scene where Shanks hands Luffy his ubiquitous straw hat First chapter of the legendary Shonen manga One piece has undoubtedly burned itself into the minds of readers. But what if it were used in a goofy slapstick comedy game like this one? masochistic diversions was that all the rage around 2010? Wouldn’t that be something?

Luckily for all of us sick, artist Tani Yurei did just that. In a video posted to Twitter today, Tani demonstrates her creation with dramatic music. Watch as carefree Captain “Red Hair” Shanks, who has just lost his arm to a giant sea monster, tries to give a distraught Monkey D. Luffy his straw hat as consolation for not allowing the young wannabe pirate to travel with him him.

It almost feels like one of those ads is designed to trick you into downloading a crappy mobile game with a video of someone who keeps failing. And boy did it work for me.

I absentmindedly ignored the potential virus threat and clicked on Tani’s link to the project file grab before too Cotton, the 2D physics simulation program for which it was developed. I wanted to put that hat on Luffy, dammit.

When first loading the One piece Game I laughed as Shanks and Luffy were instantly crushed by his Japanese instructions. A quick Google translation of the text revealed the keystrokes used to rotate Shank’s ankles, knees and waist, as well as positioning his shoulder and elbow for optimal hat placement.

All that was left was spending far too much time worrying about the controls, which required creative finger positioning to lock Shanks’ various joints in place. And while I wasn’t interested in spending time recreating the manga panel perfectly, I did make sure Luffy got the hat that has been his trademark for 25 years.

Despite its immense worldwide popularity, fans are still waiting for that one perfect one One piece Video game adaptation. This is definitely not that game, but it’s a fun way to kill some time.
