While it’s not the best Metroidvania out there, it stands out for the interesting puzzles it offers. Below we take a detailed look at the features.
The Last Case of Benedict Fox offers a gaming experience without prescribing a way forward. As with most classics in the Metroidvania genre, The Final Case of Benedict Fox has you running in circles, finding locked doors, and experiencing equal parts frustration and confusion. As I mentioned above, the game doesn’t guide the player in the right direction. It is therefore necessary to be patient and always attentive, because there are clues and hidden places that can help solve the many and very sophisticated puzzles.
The second part of the game, the Metroidvania part, is a little less clear. The controls are quite imprecise, making jumping between different platforms awkward and frustrating. In addition, it is worth highlighting the combat system, which is theoretically well designed with melee and ranged weapons, but lacks combat power and adequate feedback. All of this can leave the player unsure whether to hit the enemy or not.
The last case of Benedict Fox is not easy at all. The various monsters can easily kill the player, which can be frustrating. However, the game offers multiple difficulty levels that allow you to tailor the experience to the player’s preferences. For example, you can choose to kill monsters with a single hit or make the player immortal to make battles easier. On the other hand, if you are looking for a bigger challenge, you can also let the monsters kill Benedict in one hit.
While there is an option to choose the level of help shown on the map and if you want the puzzles to have a “solve” option so that they are solved automatically. This allows the options to be tailored to the player’s preferences and focused on a specific aspect of the game. For example, you can choose to only play puzzles by selecting immortality, or you can have puzzles solved almost automatically, thus increasing the difficulty of the fights.

The first thing that catches your eye when starting The Last Case of Benedict Fox is the beautiful graphics: a grandiose mansion full of details and the twisted worlds inspired by Lovecraft’s literary works and found in the minds of the deceased are and are characterized by their great design. The menus also share this wonderful style that makes The Last Case of Benedict Fox one of the most beautiful games in the Metroidvania genre. Unfortunately, the game has performance issues, i. H. when moving, usually left-to-right or right-to-left, the camera pans oddly, detracting from an otherwise very smooth gaming experience. . Nonetheless, the soundtrack is excellent and enriches the dark and twisted world in which most of the narrative takes place.
If you have a passion for exploration, puzzle solving and investigation in a detective adventure game, then The Last Case of Benedict Fox is for you. While it’s more of a detective adventure than Metroidvania, if you can overlook the flaws it contains, you might still enjoy the game.
