Take a breath, Support players, Overwatch 2 is about to release an update that will make your work a lot easier. It looks like every character in the hero shooter’s ninth season will gain the passive self-healing ability, once reserved for support players. It’s certainly an interesting choice.
The news of this massive change comes from a Director’s opinion Blog post from Game Director Aaron Keller, who explained that tanking and damage heroes will receive a “toned down” version of the passive healing that all support heroes receive by default. This benefit has been implemented in Overwatch 2 and lets support heroes regenerate 15 HP per second if they do not take damage for 1.5 seconds. This gives support characters some survivability as they often have less HP than other heroes. But now it sounds like everyone gets a similar benefit, but Keller’s blog post notably doesn’t mention any details about how many HP tanks and damage, how many characters passively gain health, or how long they have to go without taking damage, to get healthy again.

“This should give non-support players more opportunities to compete,” Keller wrote. “It should also take a little less pressure off support players to keep everyone alive, as individual players now have more control over their own health pool. In OverwatchThere is a constant tug of war between the power of a team and the power of an individual hero or player.”
Player reaction was mixedsince some support players feel this way undermines the usefulness of the role or could deter tanks and damage players Stay close to their supporters to heal and achieve goals. Keller acknowledges that a sweeping change like this can have a huge impact that the team may not realize until it happens. Depending on whether you have a good team, playing as support can feel like you’re babysitting, constantly trying to improve your teammates’ health while they’re in the line of fire. Anything that takes that pressure off of you and puts more responsibility on individuals to keep themselves alive so you can support them instead of having to take on the burden of sustainability yourself is welcome.
