Yesterday ReedPOP announced that PAX South will be canceled indefinitely with no plans on when or if it will return. The organizers blamed a lack of growth and the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
According to a statement from ReedPOP Sent to past PAX South attendees and later posted on the official PAX Twitter account, while others PAX events Year after year, PAX South didn’t grow.
“When the first PAX took place in 2004, we expected no more than a hundred locals,” said the organizers of ReedPOP and PAX. “Never in our wildest dreams would we have expected that more than 3,000 passionate fans would arrive or that our one-off event would become a series in five cities around the world. While each of our other events are thriving, some of which attract hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world, PAX South has not expanded and to some extent has remained the same as when we opened it in 2015. “
As mentioned earlier, PAX South 2015 started with the first event in San Antonio. The show was a smaller production, with the official website of ReedPOP, which describes the event as a “more indie drive and table top heavy show”. As a result, the event has always been one of the smaller PAX shows and attracted fewer visitors and large publishers versus older, more popular events like PAX East.
G / O Media can receive a commission
Due to the lack of growth and the ongoing problems through the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, ReedPOP has made the “tough decision” to end future PAX South events for the “foreseeable future”.
While the wording in the declaration leaves the possibility open that PAX South could potentially return in a different state or shape, many smaller developers and fans are disappointed with the news. For many people, the PAX South was a tighter, cheaper alternative to the larger gaming conventions as well PAX events.
