Like most games from Frontier Developments, including Planet Zoo, Planet Coaster 2 retains much of the charm and freedom that allows many players – but not me – to creatively build a park that virtual visitors will actually want to spend time and money exploring. Luckily, in addition to the free-form building mechanics, the game has a fairly large collection of blueprints that you can put down with ease. Even better is the host of new mechanics, like procedural weather, water parks, and streamlined park management tools to help you run a busy amusement park more efficiently.
At startup, Planet Coaster 2 has managed to settle somewhere in the middle with “Mixed” reviews on Steam. Overall, the park management and simulation game is close to achieving a “Mostly Positive” rating, but there are a few issues that are keeping players from moving in that direction. Firstly, it appears that the game's performance was lacking upon release. I encountered a few problems firsthand, most notably the guest AI refusing to queue for a ride and instead forming a massive blockage.
However, even among the game's more positive reviews, most don't try to hide the game's various problems. The positive reviews point to performance issues, another issue is UI issues and especially AI issues. But overall, players seem happy with the depth and additional content of the last game. The water parks in particular prove to be entertaining. After spending a little time building a flume, I can see why. It's a whole new level to consider when designing your dream park!
As for the negative reviews, there are many. Most point to the rushed release of the half-finished game, the impending DLC practices Frontier is known for, and the frustrating performance. But most importantly, they point out missing features such as: B. Steam Workshop support and the lack of security and vandalism mechanics that were prevalent in the previous game.
