Pokemon Go hosts an Axew Community Day event June 10 from 2pm to 5pm your local time.
We want to remind people of that check for hazardous conditions before heading out to play in local parks and outdoor areas. Your health is far more important than a Pokemon, and Axew will be in widespread use during December Community Weekend later in the year when it will (hopefully) be safer to be outside.
However, there are alternative areas to play if you’re really looking for shiny Axews, such as indoor malls and similar areas. We’ve had good luck running a fumigation at home throughout the event period, so you can do this at any time to maximize your own safety!
As you would expect from a Community Day event, axew will appear in large numbers and will have a high probability of looking shiny. There are also some other bonuses and perks which we list below.
How do I catch a Shiny Axew?
According to original research by the now-defunct Pokémon community site The Silph Road, the Shiny rate on Community Days is around 1 in 24, meaning that if you keep playing during the three-hour window, you’ll get quite a few Shiny Pokémon should be found.

If you’re short on time or Pokéballs, you can pop one incensethen quickly Tap each Axew to look for shiny ones and run away from all that aren’t shiny. Specifically, any Axews you’ve already tapped will align with your player’s position, making it easier to see which Axews you may have already checked.
What Community Day step does Axew’s development learn?
If you evolve Fraxture into Haxorus between 2pm and 10pm local time, it will learn the loaded move Breaking Swipe.
If you don’t evolve it during that period, you can probably evolve it during a Community Day weekend event in December to get Breaking Swipe. If you don’t want to wait, you can use an Elite TM to make the move.
How is Haxorus doing in the meta?
Haxorus is a good Dragon-type PvE attacker if you don’t already have a large collection of Salamence, Rayquaza, and the other powerful Pokemon of the same category. Of course, it lags behind the Shadow Pokemon, but if you need Dragon-types, consider grabbing some powerful Axew and evolving them. Set it up with dragon tail And Breaking Swipe For success.
The Community Day move, Breaking Swipe, helps Haxorus in PvP, especially in Master Leagues and some specific cups. Make sure to evolve your Fraxure and grab a Haxorus with Breaking Swipe if you like PvP.
How do I make the most of Axew Community Day?
The following bonuses will be active during Axew Community Day:
- Tripled XP for catching Pokémon
- Double candies for catching Pokémon
- Double chance for level 31+ Trainers to get XL Candy by catching Pokémon
- The incense lasts three hours
- Lure Modules lasts three hours
- Use special photo bombs when taking snapshots
- An additional special trade
- Stardust trading costs have been halved
That means you should definitely pop a Lucky Egg and an Incense and try to grab a powerful Axew.
If you can Mega Evolution Charizard X, Ampharos, Sceptile, Altaria, Salamence, Latias, or Latiosyou get additional Axew Candy per catch.
Additionally, Niantic is still running special four-star raids from 5pm to 10pm where Axew will spawn in a 300m radius around the gym for 30 minutes if you complete the Fraxure raid. These raids cannot be conducted remotely. If the usual 2-5pm spawn boost doesn’t get you the ax you’ve been wanting, you can try again with a raid.
