Pokémon Go Ponyta and Galarian Ponyta Community Day Guide

Pokemon Go has a Ponyta Community Day Event on Saturday, September 14, 2-5 p.m.in your local time.

As expected from a Community Day event, both Ponyta and Galarian Ponyta will appear in large numbers and there’s a high chance they’ll appear shiny. There are also several other bonuses and perks that we’ve listed below.

According to old research from the now defunct website The Silph Road (via Wayback Machine), shiny rates on Community Days are around 1 in 24, meaning you should find a lot of shiny Pokémon if you play through the entire three-hour window.

If you’re short on time or Poké Balls, you can pop an incense and then quickly tap each Ponyta to check for shiny ones, and run away from any that aren’t shiny. In particular, any Ponyta you’ve already tapped will be facing the direction your player is standing, so this should help you figure out which ones you may have already checked out.

If you evolve Ponyta or Galarian Ponyta into Rapidash or Galarian Rapidash between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. your local time, it will learn the charged attack Wild attack.

If you don’t manage to evolve it during that time frame, you’ll likely be able to evolve it to get Wild Charge during a Community Day weekend event in December. If you don’t want to wait, you can use an Elite TM to get the switch.

For PvE content, you don’t need to use Rapidash or Galarian Rapidash. Kantonian Rapidash is outperformed by many Fire-types, including Reshiram, Chandelure, Blaziken, Blacephalon, and even Flareon, to name a few. Galarian Rapidash is a decent Fairy-type attacker with Fairy Wind And Play roughin case you missed the legendary Tapu Pokemon. It’s also outclassed by some Pokemon (Gardevoir, Sylveon, Primarina, Florges) but still works if you need it.

In PvP, it is the other way round. Galarian Rapidash will not find any use, but Kantonian Rapidash is actually a halfway decent contender for the Ultra League if it is Burn, Wild attackAnd Flame charge.

Still, you should definitely pop a Star Piece and an Incense Stick and try to get some Ponyta.

Ponyta and its Galarian form have different types, which means that you Mega Evolve various Pokémon to receive bonus candies.. It doesn’t really matter which Ponyta you focus on, as they both have the same candy type to evolve and charge. For regular Canton Ponyta (fire type), you can Mega Evolve Charizard, Houndmon, Blazikenor Groudon (via Primal Reversion). For Galarian Ponyta (Psychic type) you can Mega Evolve Alakazam, Laughing Brothers, Gardevoir, Medicus, Broads, Latiosor Rayquaza.

In addition, Niantic is also offering special four-star raids from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., where Ponyta will appear within a 300-meter radius of the gym for 30 minutes when you complete the Ponyta raid. These raids cannot be done remotely. If you don’t get the Ponyta you want with the usual spawn increase from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., you can try a raid again.
