Pokemon Go is hosting a Slowpoke and Galar Slowpoke Community Day event March 18 from 2-5pm in your local time.
As expected at a Community Day event, Slowpoke and Galarian Slowpoke appear in large numbers with a high chance of spawning shiny. There are also several other bonuses and perks that we have listed below.
How do I catch a shiny slowpoke?
According to research by Pokémon community website The Silph RoadShiny rates on Community Days are around 1 in 24, which means if you keep playing during the three-hour window, you should find some Shiny Pokémon.
If you’re short on time or Pokéballs, you can pop one incensethen quickly Tap each Slowpoke to look for shiny ones and run away from all that aren’t shiny. In particular, any slowpoke you’ve already typed will point to where your player is standing, so this should help identify which ones you may have already checked.
What Community Day move is Slowpoke development learning?
If you evolve (Galarian) Slowpoke into (Galarian) Slowbro or (Galarian) Slowking from 14:00 to 22:00 your local time, it will learn the charged motion Surf.
Specifically, from 2pm to 10pm, the requirement that you must catch 30 Poison Pokemon to evolve Galarian Slowpoke will be changed to 30 Psi Pokemon instead, so take advantage of that.
If you miss evolving it during this period, you can likely evolve it to get Surf during a Community Day weekend event in December. If you don’t want to wait, you can use an Elite TM to catch the train.
How do Slowbro and Slowking stack up in the meta?
If you’re looking for a powerful slowpoke for Mega Evolve, don’t worry. Mega Slowbro isn’t great and is outclassed in raids by tons of other Water and Psychic-types.
The Silph Road subreddit analyst Trummelr12 notes that the gains that the Slow family will see in Surf’s PvP are minimal. They don’t do well in PvP, and they probably won’t.
How do I make the most of Slowpoke Community Day?
The following bonuses are active during Slowpoke Community Day:
- Tripled XP for catching Pokémon
- Double candy for catching Pokémon
- Double the chance for level 31+ Trainers to get XL Candy when catching Pokémon
- Incense lasts three hours
- Lure Modules takes three hours
- Slow down special photo bombs when taking snapshots
- An additional special trade
- Stardust cost to trade halved
That means you should definitely pop a Lucky Egg and an Incense and try to grab some powerful Slowpoke.
If you can Mega Evolution Alakazam, Slowbro, Gardevoir, Medicham, Latios, or Latias will give you additional Slowpoke candies per catch. Mega Evolving a Water-type Pokémon gives you bonus catch candies for Slowpoke, but not Galarian Slowpoke, so we recommend going for a Psychic-type Pokémon.
Additionally, Niantic still runs special four-star raids from 5pm to 10pm where if you complete the Slowpoke raid they will spawn in a 300m radius around the gym for 30 minutes. These raids cannot be conducted remotely. If the usual 2-5pm spawn increase doesn’t get you the slowpoke you want, you can try raids for another chance.
