Every Pokémon is interesting and worth talking about. I don’t play a lot Pokémon, but I enjoy the universe and love learning more about the creatures in it. So, here’s another Pokémon! It’s Gengar!
Gengar details
Type: ghost / poison
Average Height: 4’11 “
Average weight: 89.3 pounds.
First introduced in Generation I.
According to the internet and the people I work with, Gengar is a very powerful character in the recently released one Unite Pokémon also known as the Pokémon MOBA. So I figured it would be fun to cover Gengar this week and who knows, maybe some people are looking for it Unite Pokémon-Gengar related content will stop by and read this. However, after reading about Gengar, I am scared of walking into a room without turning on all of the lights. That’s not fun. This is horror movie shit.
Gengar is a ghost. But you probably already knew that. What I didn’t know is that according to one Pokedex entry found on Bulbapedia‘Gengar is the spirit of a dead man. This is not a situation where the Pokedex vaguely indicates its past, it is made explicit and clear that this thing was once a human. This is what the entry says:
“It obviously wants a travel companion. Since it was once human itself, it tries to create you by stealing other people’s lives. “

That single entry could leave you feeling guilty for Gengar. It’s just a lonely ghost looking for a friend. NO! Don’t fall for that shit. Gengar may be lonely, I don’t deny that, but it’s also a threat, often hiding in dark rooms or shadows, terrifying people. Not only does it try to scare people, but it will attack them and even “steal their lives”. A Pokedex entry even states that if you see or feel a Gengar around you, it will be too late. “There is no escape. To give up.”
So sure, you can as Gengar in yours Pokémon MOBA. But just know that you play as a cold, calculating, and twisted killer. Wait, that just sounds like The Joker. Damn it, I make Gengar more popular.
Random facts
- Apparently, its large mouth in its gigantamax form is directly connected to the afterlife. Indeed, you can hear your dead loved ones calling out to you from Gengar’s mouth.
- I wonder how people in the Pokemon universe deal with the knowledge that there is life after death and the dead live on in some form? Seems like a big thing that could change people’s lives completely!
- I take a moment to notice that Gengar has a great design. It’s simple, but not boring or generic. Gengar is one of my favorite 1st generation designs. (No, I’m not just saying this to make Gengar less angry at me and possibly to save my life. Okay … maybe that’s why I added that last fact.)
