We only have six days in 2022 and the year begins with an absolute delirium. Thanks to an extravagant circus troupe, we can now say with absolute certainty that Pope Francis himself heard “Megalovania”, the iconic track from Toby Fox’s hit game. Undertale.
It was during a papal audience on Wednesday, a regular event where the Pope greeted and blessed the public. This one happened to have a circus act that was performing for entertainment, and her band was playing the song. The clip went viral after Twitter user Ultima posted a recording of the event, which you can check out below.
The video is legitimate. You can also Check out the performance on an official Vatican news site. The performance is very foolish. One person in a jersey decorated with flames twisted a top hat on their feet and others juggled and bounced balls. (At one particularly funny point you see a juggler dropping a ball.) After the song ends, the Pope thanks the performers and says that beauty leads us to God.
Undertale has multiple endings depending on how many monsters you kill while playing. Ironically, “Megalovania” is the theme played during a boss fight with the skeleton Sans after a player goes the so-called genocide route after killing too many characters.
Why perform “Megalovania”? We don’t know why that particular group chose him, but the chiptune-esque “Megalovania” is one of the most famous tracks by Undertale. With over 105 million listeners on Spotify alone, the song is not only popular, but also a meme and has been remixed and reused online in countless contexts.
This isn’t even the first time the Pope has been exposed Undertale. In 2016, gaming personality and YouTuber gave MatPat a copy of Undertale to the Pope as a gift. Perhaps it is time for His Holiness to take the lead and embark on the pacifist run!
