Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is an absolute classic, and while the original, which was first released in 2003, is still very entertaining, the modern remake currently in development will hopefully be an improvement. Assuming that thing ever finds a way out of development hell.
When we reported on it last year, The game – a reboot of the original, only this time based on the Assassin’s Creed engine – was scheduled for release in January 2021. Then it was pushed back to March. Then it was postponed indefinitelywhich is never a good sign.
Now, over a year later, the latest news from the project is that it has completely transformed developers, being taken away from Ubisoft’s two Indian studios (Pune and Mumbai) and dumped into the folds of Ubisoft Montreal. Who were the original developers of the game in 2003?
A statement released today by Ubisoft, signed only by the “development team”, reads:
Hello Prince of Persia fans!
Development of Prince of Persia: the Sands of Time Remake is now led by Ubisoft Montréal, the actual birthplace of the epic Sands of Time trilogy.
This decision is an important step and the team, building on the work of Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai, will now take the time it takes to regroup across the scope of the game to bring you the best experience for this game Remake of an all-time classic when it’s done.
We would like to thank you all for your continued support and patience throughout development. Rest assured that we will keep you updated on the progress in a future update.
The development team
For a game that should be out in January 2021, an update like this is Mention of the words “when it’s done” without further reference to the progress of the project or expected release, is not exactly a good omen.
