Sony released a new “Play Has No Limits” ad for the PlayStation 5 on Tuesday to celebrate its four-year anniversary since its launch in 2020. No one would have thought twice about it, except that fans would have spotted a seemingly innocent but potentially telling reference to a December date. Could Sony be planning an eleventh-hour PlayStation show to mark its 30th anniversary?
The discovery was shared on Reddit and points to the 0:47 mark in the YouTube video below. A station timetable with the numbers 03 12 20:24 is displayed while the entrance column turns into PlayStation symbols. Some fans are wondering if it’s a reference to a possible event on December 3, 2024. Perhaps a final State of Play or larger livestream event hinting at what’s to come for the PS5?
It’s a reach, but there are a few things that make it feel within the realm of possibility. First, commentators have noted that there is precedent for Sony holding December events. Once upon a time, during the PS4 generation, it hosted fan-focused PlayStation Experience events. And even though they had been discontinued many years ago at this point, Sony was running a special promotion State of affairs in December 2019
Overall, it also felt like a strange year for PS5 announcements. Sony’s standard Summer 2024 presentation has been downgraded to State of Play, and while there are plenty of exclusives coming to the console this year, gamers still don’t have a good look at what’s going to happen in 2025. A December presentation would be the perfect time for it tease more from Sucker Punch Spirit of Yotei
There’s also another big event taking place next month: the Geoff Keighley’s Game Awards. Scheduled for December 12th, the show could well see a big unveiling from Sony at this show, which attracts more and more people every year. Or perhaps the company wants to set the stage with its own “State of Play” earlier this month, before using Keighley’s show for a second, deeper look at something already revealed.
Or maybe a few stills from a random PlayStation commercial aren’t actually intended to signal anything. Anyway, we’ll find out soon enough.
