Any PC gamer among you, or even more serious Xbox owners (who have had this for years) will be familiar with a technology called Variable Refresh Rate or VRR, a feature that permitted “a dynamic display refresh rate that can vary continuously and seamlessly on the fly.” This feature is coming to PS5 consoles later this week.

This is a lot more important than it sounds if you care about visual fidelity (and consistency) in your games. By syncing your console and display at the same refresh rate, you’re less likely to experience lag or quality drops between the two, meaning things like screen tearing can be reduced or even eliminated

During Sony’s announcement was all wordsif you want a video explanation with some examples of how it works, here’s something Nvidia developed for their own G-Sync technology:

Now for the technical details. First, this update is coming later this week as part of a broader PS5 update, but will only work on TVs and monitors that are HDMI 2.1 VRR compatible, so you’ll need to check if your display supports it first. Second, it doesn’t just flip a magic switch; Games must be patched individually to take advantage of VRR, and as such, the timing (and ultimate availability) of this support is up to individual studios and publishers.

Earlier today, Sony released a list of games that will receive patches in “the coming weeks”.

  • Astro’s playroom
  • Call of Duty: Vanguard
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
  • destiny 2
  • Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition
  • DIRT 5
  • godfall
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift apart
  • Resident Evil Village
  • Tiny Tina’s Wonderland
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
  • tribes of Midgard

Don’t you play on this list? Or is it, and you’re wondering when exactly the support will come? Sony says: “These are just some of the PS5 titles getting VRR support and we want to thank their talented development teams. Please stay tuned to their channels for updates as you will have the best experience with VRR once their game patches are live.”
