PS5 Pro owners say some games look worse on 0 hardware

The PlayStation 5 Pro is in circulation for over a week, and while it offers impressive improvements over many existing games, there are also some where it appears to introduce new problems that make things look even worse. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and the Silent Hill 2 Remake are just a few games that new PS5 Pro owners and Digital foundry Analyzes find problems with.

The PS5 Pro is said to offer additional graphics modes for enhanced games, allowing them to run at higher frame rates without sacrificing graphical detail, thanks in part to the new PSSR upscaling technology. And that's definitely the case with a variety of first-party blockbusters like… Spider Man 2 And Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apartas well as exclusive offers from third parties such as Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Unfortunately, not every game benefits from its PS5 Pro update.

Collapse of Digital Foundry from Star Wars Jedi: Survivor“Problematic image quality issues” were noted with the visuals on the new hardware, particularly in the 60fps performance mode. Part of the problem seems to be how foliage and the new ray tracing feature work together to create a “strobe effect” that makes it seem like bushes are shimmering. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor was also notorious for some visual issues on launch day, and many of its current problems on Pro appear to be related to a dynamic resolution that can drop as low as 720p.

When it comes to that Silent Hill 2 Remake, the problem is that the PS5 Pro update is still not available and the game is having strange, shimmering issues in the meantime. Even without an official improvement, the game should still look the same or slightly more stable thanks to the general boost The better specs of the console. Instead, players have been complaining for a week in the hope that Bloober Team will announce a solution. “I absolutely love this game and can't stop playing it even though I want to,” one player wrote. “A PS5 Pro expansion is absolutely necessary in this case. The game feels great, but it looks like crap.”

So what's the point? While there's no official word yet on what's causing these issues and whether it's with the games or something to do with the PS5 Pro itself, a current theory Some owners believe the issues are caused by games with base resolutions below 1080p being upscaled by the Pro's PSSR technology. Games with higher base resolutions seem to have fewer upscaling issues.

“I think it perhaps shows that developers… shouldn't just blindly add PSSR to a game unless they really look at the subjective output and say, 'That's a great win'.” Digital foundryThis is Alex Battaglia said during a recent video. “Because if the current model can't scale from such a low resolution and look good, then they shouldn't add it, right?” Currently, Dragon Age: The Veil Guardian And Alan Wake 2both of which run under 1080 also appear to have sub-optimal performance on the PS5 Pro.

While there are dozens of games currently enhanced for the PS5 Pro that do not experience these issues, and thousands more benefiting from the better hardware's general boost mode, this is still a notable flaw for the console at launch, especially considering its serious $700 price tag.

Update 11/19/2024 4:00 p.m. ET: Both Bloober Team and EA confirmed that they are investigating issues with Silent Hill 2 and Jedi: Survivor respectively on PS5 Pro. “We’re working on it!” Bloober Team tweeted.
