After releasing a virtual reality mod for Grand Theft Auto V. last yearDeveloper Luke Ross is back with a similar project for his Wild West cousin. Red Dead Redemption 2.
“Red Dead Redemption 2 is much more advanced than Grand Theft Auto V. from a technical point of view, ”continued Ross his patreon. “The supported graphics APIs (Vulkan and DX12) are similarly more complex than DX11 Grand Theft Auto V. based. I had to create a whole new framework for VR injection. basically everything i had built for them Grand Theft Auto V. Mod was now useless and had to be rewritten from scratch. “
As detailed by Virtual Reality Oasis in the video above, this mod offers a broader perspective of the action, but without the independent controls per hand that you would expect in a game natively built for virtual reality. So you can look around the world in extremely believable 3D by simply moving your head. However, you will still need to control your character with a simple Xbox-style gamepad. It’s the same compromise you always have to make when adding VR functionality to previous 2D-only games.
Even so, it still seems like an impressive piece of engineering. Ross had to completely scrap the technology they had created for them Grand Theft Auto V. In terms of VR conversion, it took them a full year to prepare this new mod for initial release.
If you follow VR games, you know that VR absolutely devours graphical power Red Dead Redemption 2 As you can imagine, the GPU requirements for it to run smoothly in VR are anything but trivial. In fact, Virtual Reality Oasis tested it on a top of the line RTX 3090 and reported significant stutters and issues nonetheless. You can see it for yourself in the footage: RDR2 In VR, even an RTX 3090 asks for relief.

Ross made this mod available to his Patreon subscribers as an early access bonus for their support. It should be compatible with all popular headsets via Oculus and SteamVR. If you like what you see, maybe you should send him a few dollars and try it out for yourself. Better a strong GPU!
