Valve released a major announcement today that spreads the fact that "there has been a steady increase in the number of games gaining success on Steam". Of course Valve can celebrate its own platform, but in sharing success stories, it's easy to forget the growing number of failed games.
Posted by community In-depth data: How is new releases to Steam?, Valve introduces some data with findings such as "More new releases than previously achieved", "Most recent successes have never been on the platform" and "Many games have done better in 2019 vs 2018".
Those things are all true! But for anyone who uses Steam at any point of time and will know that the platform is completely covered with games, most of them falling somewhere between the range "anything" to "absolute trash", some are good but they drown in the sea for competitive releases.
Kyle Orland at Ars Technica approaching Valve's sales data from the other end of the spectrum, where "as the number of successes on Steam increased, the number of failures increased significantly, both completely.
They hold the key from the bottom of the market that even with some games Valve talks about as success stories, those who made $ 20-60,000 in their first 12 months, can often be a commercial failure if that one-time game is a full time job for any over 1-2 people . And if 80% of the games aren't even $ 5000, that's too bad.
And while you can argue that it's similar to loads of other creative fields, many of those do not require the full-time work done by the video game, or the supported publishing houses and production channels.
There is no easy answer to this! There is only so much money and a lot of time there, so most game loads will be ignored / unresolved as the market does what they do and say.
The only thing we can do is continue to remember this as game buyers, here it is indeed keep this in mind if you are crazy enough to consider making a video game with the prospects you have made money from.
