Ethan Winters has it pretty rough. Not only had he nailed his left hand off his then girlfriend Mia in a chainsaw resident Evil 7th (and suffer from the terrible events of this game in general), he loses his wife and child at the beginning of Resident Evil Village. Additionally, Capcom appears intent on using Ethan’s hands for free torture porn during the events of Village.
The internet makes fun of Ethan for having his hands chopped off, chewed, slashed and stabbed all the time. It comes with territory when you’re a first-person protagonist in a Resident Evil game I suppose.

In the first hours of VillageEthan succumbs to the following hand-related trauma:
- A Lycan bites off two fingers and part of Ethan’s left hand
- Lady Dimitrescu cuts his hand open to get a taste of his blood
- The Dimitrescu daughters hang Ethan on hooks by his hands (and he frees himself by ripping them out of his palms in the most painful way).
- Lady Dimitrescu cuts off his right hand cleanly!
In the course of two games, Ethan severed BOTH hands and regained full use, thanks in part to Resident Evil’s magical medicinal herbs. Ethan just has to soak his hands in First Aid Med, a miracle sauce that not only heals skin, muscles and bones, but also repairs the sleeves (?). Basically, it’s a magic potion.
Poor Ethan’s hands have since become endless meme fodder for Resident Evil players.

At least Ethan suffers from all of this hand-related trauma for admirable reasons! He may not be “smart”, but he is … persistent.
The defining characteristics of Ethan Winters are that they can take almost any blow or mutilation and are also dumber than a box of hammers. He is an extremely powerful woman.
