Earlier today, former Fail Developer Joel Burgess shared the sad news that it was inspired by real life Fallout 4‘s Canine companion Dogmeat had died. In a thread on Twitter Burgess shared how much of an impact River had on the team that was being worked on Fallout 4 and the dogmeat character.
Using River as a direct inspiration for Dogmeat wasn’t always the plan, according to Burgess. But he wanted to make sure the canine companion was in Fallout 4 wasn’t just a weapon. After seeing a new team member, cover their desk with reference photos of German shepherds growl, growl, and bite, Burgess began bringing the lovable River into the studio. Burgess stated that River was not brought in Getting “stabbed” or “nudged” but becoming part of the team and, more importantly, connecting with the various developers who are working on it Fallout 4 Dog meat. “The more they bonded with her, the more they saw Dogmeat as a character – as a friend.” said Burgess.
Quickly, more and more people working on the game began spending time with River and contributing to the Dogmeat project. While Dogmeat River obviously looks very similar, Dogmeat also uses audio recordings of the real dog. To receive 911 calls, Burgess once had to lock herself in another room out of sight of River. Eventually the dog started calling for her owner and friend. “These sessions were a little heartbreaking” admitted citizen. “But they have also proven to be great references for happy little celebrations.”
Another Dogmeat trait taken straight from River was the way Dogmeat runs, pauses, looks back and waits in front of the player. This was something the developers and Burgess noticed early on when they were walking outside and River it was added Fallout 4.

Burgess and the team’s goal with Dogmeat wasn’t to create another deadly companion, but rather to create a friend for the players. Someone they could count on.
“Dog meat is a rope,” said Burgess. “He grounds you in the world, will always be by your side, leading you to your family, and anticipating your needs. He wants you to be safe and happy. In other words, he loves you. And if love is River’s legacy, I’m satisfied. Rest in peace, big girl. “
