I can’t believe I had to dig so far back into the archives to but everyone who visited the site in 2008 (!) may remember a game called Rose & Camelliawhat was somehow how Punch out!only if all were straight out of a Jane Austen novel.
Here’s the pitch for the 2007 originalwhat it does sound like a complex game of complicated social and political intrigues:
The day after Reiko married into the Tsubakikoji patrician family, her beloved husband died, leaving her nothing but a rose and his family’s scorn. Despite her humble origins, Reiko is determined to claim her title as mistress as the wife of Shunsuke, the eldest son of the House of Tsubakikoji. But the mocking aristocrats who make up the female members of the main branch of the family deny their rightful position. Clutching the rose Shunsuke gave her on their wedding night, she prepares to prove her case, by force if necessary, and put the evil Bluebloods in her place.
However, the gameplay involved beating the shit out of anyone who got in their way. The game was great and led to a sequel just a year later, then a third entry in the series was released in 2013, this time tying in with La Mulana. However, I haven’t even thought about this game in over a decade, and probably neither of you, which is why it’s a wild surprise to see that a port of the first game is on the way to Nintendo Switch.
Not only does this bring the joys of the game to a whole new generation, but it also adds motion controls via JoyCon controllers and will allow for multiplayer for the first time so you can beat a friend instead of the CPU. There’s no release date, price, or any hints of a Western release (the original was a Japanese game, and this announcement was only made in Japanese), but you can (and should) check out the trailer below:
