Season 3 of Netflix’s Derry Girls is hilarious — but a mystery calls for answers

Derry girls Season 3 is available on Netflix, complete with a Liam Neeson cameo and all manner of hijinks from the gang of Catholic girls (and James) in Northern Ireland. The show is still hilarious – it’s one of the best comedies you can watch on Netflix – but something in particular from the first episode got you thinking.

The Derry Girls go to the local video store and briefly consider renting brave heart before leaving to pull off a devious plan (you should watch the episode). But first they meet Nurse Michael, who teases them about her exam results before being called to the checkout to pick up “the new Martin Scorsese movie” that appears to have been shelved for them.

First of all – fantastic, no notes. Aside from being a well-known Catholic filmmaker, Scorsese’s dark sense of humor perfectly matches Sister Michael’s sensibilities. But which movie was that? For this moment I got my degree in journalism.

The third season of Derry girls takes place in the spring of 1998. The two most recently released Scorsese films were then casino (1995) and Bundle up (1997). casino would be especially fun for Sister Michael to hire. It’s raunchy, violent, and arguably Scorsese’s sexiest film. casino was released in the UK and Ireland in February 1996 while the Oscar-nominated historical epic Bundle up

was released in the UK in April 1998.

Since she’s at a video store and not a theater, it’s possible she’s renting something casino and it just took forever to come out locally on VHS. But I think the smart money is on Bundle —

It had just come out, and while it wasn’t fully available on VHS at the time, we’re going to give this fictional comedy series some storytelling flexibility. After all, Sister Michael’s charmingly scathing wit and penchant for colorful language would make her a great addition to almost any Scorsese film – mob variant, Catholic variant or otherwise.

The show’s attention to detail with contemporary accuracy is one of the many things that transforms it from a fun, breezy comedy into a truly great television show. It’s the little moments like this that make the world feel lived in (and let the show’s dramatic moments land in a more deeply felt way). Even the fact that the video store employee specifically reserved it for Sister Michael instead of calling her to reserve it herself adds an extra layer of detail and insight into the world of the show and the characters that live in it.
